Jessica Kagan Cushman

"Message in a Bangle"

Whimsical, fun and rather "Expressive" is what can best describe Jessica Kagan Cushman bangles.

Daughter of renowned furniture designer Vladimir Kagan and needlework queen Erica Wilson design runs in her veins, so it seems only natural that Jessica Cushman's work is totally unique and fresh. Having learned scrimshaw from her father, Jessica has taken the artform to a new (and slightly un-orthodox) level - creating bracelets that lie somewhere between a tattoo and a bumper sticker. Jessica takes quotes and phrases, from movies, literature and in some cases, New York graffiti and transcribes them via scrimshaw onto resin bracelets - combing a venerable traditional craft with wry, modern wit.

Today Jessica Cushman's bangles, can be found at the most exclusive stores and are frequent in the pages of all the major magazines, such as Instyle, W, Elle, Nylon.

Pick your favourite phrases from our selection of Jessica Kagan Cushman bangles here at Farfallina.net and you can say once again that you've seen it here First!

Hervé Van der Straeten - Simply Bold

Hervé Van der Straeten’s designs have a beautiful authority that is menacing and majestic at the same time. Painstakingly crafted, their pristine, sculpted forms, rich textures, and optical tricks possess a perplexing, mischievous elegance.

“They say that for a sculpture to be good, it needs to have seven perfect angles. With my designs, there are interesting and unexpected visual intrigues from every direction,” says Van der Straeten, who studied sculpture and painting before launching into jewelry design for fashion icons such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Lacroix.

Eloquently timeless and expertly crafted, each Van der Straeten design is produced in Paris at his private workshops, often the result of over several hundred hours of expert artisan labor.

We Love...Tom Binns

Tom Binns is an Irish designer full of anger. He directs this anger into his designs showcasing his creativity and boldness, while at the same time creating plenty of controversy. For example, he created a piece combining a flying toy plane with streaming nuts and bolts to express his thoughts on Boeing’s safety records. Binns studied jewelry design at Middlesex Poly. There he showcased his talents in the PX shop in Convent Garden. When he left college, he started working with Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood for their World’s End project. After this stint, he experimented with strech fabrics and manmade fibres as well as "junk" such as scrap metal, broken spectacles, bent forks, and light-bulbs. He found success in Europe, but felt that his work would be fully appreciated in the United States because of his belief that Americans are more open to new ideas. He is now based in New York but his goals still remain the same - "...I want to make people think, to challenge them. That is the function of art." www.tombinnsdesign.com

Roger Vivier - The stye Icon

Talented shoe designer, Roger Vivier designed extravagant, decorated shoes that he described as sculptures. He is credited with the invention of the stiletto spike heel by using a thin rod of steel encased in plastic that was able to support the wearers weight. He was described as the "Fragonard of the shoe" and his shoes as "the Faberge of footwear." Ava Gardner, Queen Elizabeth II and The Beatles were all fans of his shoes.

He designed shoes for Christian Dior between 1953 and 1963. During his time their he created a number of new heel shapes including the comma and the stiletto. Silk, pearl and bead trimmings, lace, paste, appliqué and jewels were all used to decorate his unique shoes.

In the 60s Vivier made silk-satin knee boots, outlined in jewels, and thigh-high evening boots in a black elasticised knit with beads. The most copied shoes of the decade were his Pilgrim pumps with silver buckles

Vivier's shoes are now highly sought after by museums all over the world. His shoes are on display at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Musée du Costume et de la Mode at the Louvre.

The Pearl

I thought it might be useful to give you some information about pearls, since we carry a few lines with Majorca & freshwater pearls. So let's start..

Freshwater pearls

Natural freshwater pearls are seldom perfectly round or even nearly round, more often than not they are baroque, slugs, or wings. Freshwater pearls are noted for their wide range of color, they can be found in white, silvery white, pink, salmon, red, copper, bronze, brown, lavender, purple, green, blue, cream, and yellow. Although white is the most common color, the most desirable are the pastel pinks, roses, lavenders, and purples. The different colors are a function of the mussel species, genetics, water quality, and the position of the pearl in the
shell. Generally, pearls assume the color of the shell in which they form.
Freshwater pearls occur in mussels for the same reason that saltwater pearls occur in oysters. Foreign material, usually a sharp object or parasite, enters a mussel and cannot be expelled.

Cultured pearls

The birth of a pearl is truly a miraculous event. Unlike gemstones or precious metals that must be mined from the earth, pearls are grown by live oysters far below the surface of the sea. They are born from their mother oysters with a shimmering iridescence, luster and soft inner glow that is unlike any other gem on earth.

A natural pearl begins its life as a foreign object, such as a parasite or piece of sand, that by accident lodges itself in the oyster’s soft inner body where it cannot be expelled. In an effort to ease this irritant, the oyster’s body takes defensive action. The oyster begins to secrete a smooth, hard crystalline substance around the irritant in order to protect itself. This substance is called nacre. As long as the irritant remains within its body, the oyster will continue to secrete nacre around the irritant, layer upon layer. After a few years, the irritant will be totally encased by the silky crystalline coatings. The result — the lovely and lustrous gem called a pearl. Cultured pearls are formed by oysters in almost an identical fashion. The only difference is that man surgically implants the irritant — a small piece of polished shell — in the oyster rather than leaving it to chance, then steps aside to let nature and the oyster create their miracle.
