After a variety of different designer accessories projects, such as the tricks gadgets and customized belts, the Italian fashion house has now turned its attention in costume jewellery, offering a limited edition line of costume jewellery with a retro look. And it's no surprise here; since most of the Top labels and iconic designer houses these days, have recently rolled out lines of their own costume jewellery, tackling in the jewellery market aiming to reach their existing client base with new products!

Using an exclusive range of material, Prada commissioned a range of costume jewellery using costume stones that are cut to resemble precious stones and set in metal bezels. Peace, Love and a Hippie Holiday - Designer beetle cufflinks

A new line of 160 styles of cute mini "beetle" cufflinks for men (or women) will be launched by Barneys New York and Volkswagen next month. With a price tag of $550 ( around £345) these sweet handcrafted silver and enamel cufflinks are made in the shape of the iconic 1974 VW Beetle.

As part of a counterculture moment at Barneys commemorating the 50th anniversary of the peace sign, Volkswagen has joined forces with Barneys in this campaign, the theme of which is "Peace & Love: Have a Hippie Holiday" in celebration of the New Beetle's 10th anniversary.

Laura Soave, Volkswagen's general manager of marketing, quoted: "We recognize with the current situation, this will not be for everyone. But these are specialized items. It's like a collector's item.

So girls if you'll be around New York in November snap a few for a special Christmas present or a treat for yourself!

Designer Jewellery by Cora Sheibani | Sweet like a cherry pie!

Cora Sheibani, is a Swiss jewellery designer that creates jewellery inspired by pastry! Her inspiration, (as it's the case in most inspirational moments in ones life) came to her one day when she encounter problems in her production.

Frustrated and distressed, she spend her afternoon indulging in pastries in Zurich (well after all she is a girl..and we all know that this method works!). As luck had it, she then met a goldsmith, who so happened he had some antique copper molds for pastries and candies and that gave her a new kick start to begin collecting them herself. She even went to the great extend of taking courses in the historic confectionery (where is that class cause i wan to take it myself!).

Now six years later, her jewellery, created in precious metals and semi precious stones, are resembling a tray of petits fours. Her pieces are whimsical, fun and I might say very different; like her gold pretzels necklace or her candy and cup cake rings.

Ms Sheibani's pieces start at $4,000 and can go up to $9,500 and if you live in New York city, you can view her work at the Arts Corporation Studio from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Arts Corporation Studio | 4th floor, 35 Great Jones Street (Lafayette Street) | 646.509.3753.

For the rest of us that New York might be a bit too far fetched, you can see Ms Sheibani's exhibition tour and dates in London and Zurich by visiting her exhibition page.

Vicroire De Castellane - A Designer's profile

Even if you don't know the name Vicroire De Castellane, you definitely have seen, know (and probably suffer over) her jewellery! Vicroire De Castellane is the 42 year old designer of the Dior Fine Jewellery lines, that lives and works in Paris creating all these beautiful collections of fine jewellery for the Dior House.

In a recent interview this is what she had to say:

• Jewellery is like a friend! I don't feel alone when i wear it and it looks nice when you make gestures.

• When you get older, replace fashion statements with jewellery statements. That way it's harder to feel ridiculous.

• It's a mistake to wear spectacles with earrings. It's too complicated. (Strong point!)

• It's important to maintain your childish spirit in life. You feel more free, that everything is possible!

• It's a big job to be a girl in the world, mother or not. We ask a lot of girls; to be mothers, executives, cooks...Girls have to take care of themselves!

Architect Frank Gehry Designs Jewelry for Tiffany & Co

Frank Gehry’s buildings are widely known and celebrated worldwide, with his Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain taking a large piece of the credit for that city’s newly achieved prominence on the world stage.

Although designing a line of jewelry for Tiffany & Co. might seem odd at first, the pairing turned out a success. Gehry often designs the preliminary ideas for his buildings in messy, rough sketches, eventually transformed into buildable models by his staff, and the process was likely similar for the jewelry. Tiffany describes most of his pieces as containing an “inner energy” and the label certainly fits when Gehry’s jewelry is contrasted with what you’d normally find in a Tiffany’s store.

FAKE Tiffany jewellery Melt down

Ever heard the expression "If it's too good to be true..".

This week FAKE Tiffany jewellery with a street value of half a million pounds has been melted down as a warning was flashed to unsuspecting consumers. 9,000 items, including necklaces, earrings and bracelets, were seized in high-profile raids in Thornaby by Cleveland Police and Stockton Trading Standards officers..

The jewellery, along with other high value items such as Chanel handbags and Hermes scarves, were part of a haul seized from two Chinese nationals operating from an address in Teesdale in 2006.

Large volumes of counterfeit goods were being sold on a UK-based internet site. The couple, in their 20s, believed to be behind the operation did not answer bail and are believed to have fled back to China. The investigation led to a number of bank accounts held by them being frozen by the Government’s Assets Recovery Agency in November last year.

Trading standards chiefs issued a warning to consumers to avoid buying cheap counterfeit jewellery from online auction sites.

David Kitching, Stockton trading standards and licensing manager, said: “This type of jewellery is often manufactured from cheap materials. In this case it contained high levels of aluminium and zinc which can cause skin problems for wearers who have a sensitivity.

So next time you think you got a Bargain..Think Again!!
Do your homework, look around and make an educated decision. Things have a certain price for a Reason!

7 Things You should Know before Buying Gold Jewelry

Gold jewellery have been in vogue for centuries and they never go out of style for a good reason. Pure gold is as wearer-friendly and rather beautiful and doesn't react with other elements to create tarnish. However, buying gold jewellery can sometimes also be confusing. Whether you're considering a gift of jewellery for someone special or as a treat for yourself, here is a list of things you should know in order to get the best quality gold jewelry for your money, whether you're shopping for pure gold jewellery or Designer and Costume gold jewellery in a traditional brick and mortar store, by catalog or online.

1. How Pure Is Your Gold Jewelry?

When shopping for Gold jewellery you might find different markings on gold accompanied by a different range in pricing. Gold can be marked 18K, 14K, or 10K and in some countries even down to 9K.

But what does this means?

K is standing for karat, the system used to describe the proportion of gold is mixed with the other metals. The higher the karat number, the higher the percentage of gold in your gold jewellery and of course the higher the price. Most gold jewelry is marked with its karat quality, although marking is not required by law.

• 24K gold is pure gold. Because 24K gold is soft, it's usually mixed with other metals to increase its hardness and durability.

• 18K gold contains 18 parts gold and 6 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 75% gold.

• 14K gold contains 14 parts gold and 10 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 58.3% gold.

• 12K gold contains 12 parts gold and 12 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 50% gold.

• 10K gold contains 10 parts gold and 14 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 41.7% gold. In the United States, 10K gold is the minimum karat that can be called "gold".

• Solid gold refers to an item made of any karat gold, if the inside of the item is not hollow. The proportion of gold in the piece of jewelry still is determined by the karat mark.

2. European Markings:

European gold jewellery is marked with numbers that indicate their percentage of gold, such as:

• 18K gold is marked 750 to indicate 75% gold
• 14K gold is marked 585 for 58.5%
• 10K gold is marked 417 for 41.7%

In Italy and Greece gold jewelry are mainly produced in 18K & 14K gold, with 18K gold being the most popular.

3. Why Gold Is Mixed With Other Metals?

Pure gold is soft and isn't practical for daily wear. In order to make gold jewellery more durable and lower its cost, other metals are mixed with it.

Adding other metals to the mix also allows metallurgists to change the color of gold.
• Palladium or nickel can be added to create White gold.
• Copper produces a rose or pink tint, while silver gives gold a greenish cast.

When metals are added to the gold the result is an alloy, a blended mixture.

4. When Gold Is Used as a Coating

There are many ways to mechanically apply a coating of gold onto a much less expensive metal, reducing the item's cost. The thicker the layer of gold, the less likely it is to wear away easily and expose the metal underneath. Jewelry can be plated with gold in a variety of ways which are explained below:

5. Gold Vermeil

Gold Vermeil is a process which was developed in France in the mid-1700s and describes the combination of sterling silver with a heavy gold electroplating of 18k, 22k or 24K gold. A minimum thickness of 2.5 microns of gold must be deposited before a piece of jewellery can be marked or sold as Vermeil and is higher in quality. (Regular plating is less than 2.5 microns).

The White House has a collection of vermeil tableware kept on display (when not in use) in the Vermeil Room.

6. Gold Filled Jewelry

Gold-filled, gold overlay and rolled gold plate are terms used to describe the process in which a base metal, usually copper, is bonded with thinner ingots of gold. A "sandwich" is formed by mechanically bonding a layer of gold on both sides of the copper ingot. This "sandwich" is then cold worked by rolling or drawing until a much thinner gauge metal is achieved.

Products are then formed or die-struck from this layered material. The object is then gold plated to hide the edges, as they would otherwise reveal the sandwiched construction. Hallmarking will appear as 1/20th 14k gold filled, indicating that by weight, 1/20th of the metal content of the product is 14k gold.

7. Gold Plated Jewellery

Gold plating is a method of depositing a thin layer of gold onto the surface of another metal, most often copper or silver, by chemical or electrochemical means. The terms gold electroplate, or gold plated, indicates an applied coating of gold over a base metal.

The plated coating must not be less than 10k in fineness, to a minimum overall equivalent of seven millionths of an inch of fine gold. If the coating is equivalent to 100 millionths of an inch of fine gold it may be marked Heavy Gold Electroplate or HEP.

A coating that is any thinner must be marked Gold Flashed or Gold Washed.

Gold can be worked into nearly any shape, including tiny strands that do not break easily and can be manipulated nearly in any way a jeweler or artisan desires. However the price of a finished piece of gold jewelry, whether is made with real gold, gold plated or gold vermeil, will also be dependent on the Design, Craftsmanship and the Brand or Designer name that has signed off that piece of jewellery.

Have a quick pick on our selection of Designer & Costume Jewelry most of them realised in 18K and 24K Gold Vermeil!
